Escape the Specter of the Group Assignment

Group assignments can be downright frightening. One student takes over while another does the bare minimum. Someone vanishes without a trace, and the night before the deadline comes the chilling message: “Wait…what are we supposed to be doing?”

But there’s a reason we keep asking students to work together: employers consistently cite collaboration as an essential workplace skill. If students need to learn how to work effectively on teams, we need to give them well-designed opportunities to practice.

Join the Teaching and Learning Center as we confront the horrors that haunt group work and explore practical ways to build accountability, encourage meaningful participation, manage conflict, and design collaborative assignments that actually work.

Bring your group-work horror stories. Leave with tricks, treats, and strategies to make group work a little less terrifying.
